While the pundits blather on about polar bears, 200 million people are at risk THIS YEAR.
And all the major weather centers agree.
CNN, The Weather Channel, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Colorado State University, and dozens more research organizations have released predictions that conditions are ripe for a catastrophic hurricane landfall in the United States in the next two years.
GWO, the organization that has issued the most accurate hurricane and El Niño predictions by any organization over the past 8 years, predicts that 2016 will be the most “dangerous and costly” hurricane season in over a decade.
NOTE: If you’re not in a coastal region, read on. These patterns can cause devastation in many different ways -- meaning this isn’t just a coastal problem.
What’s worse is that experts predict 2017 to be even more deadly than 2016!
Over the two year period, GWO expects 5 to 8 United States Hurricane Hot Spots -- large geographic areas where hurricanes are likely to strike. These hot spots stretch from the Texas coastline all the way up to New York City.
According to NOAA, the El Niño is dissipating giving way to La Niña which means more hurricane activity. This coupled with above average water temperatures in the Western Atlantic means they’ll be more destructive storms -- and more of them near the US Coastline and the Bahamas.
Crown Weather Systems notes that there were 6 other years that most closely matched the current weather conditions: 1959, 1966, 1973, 1983, 1985 & 1992.
So I dug into what those years looked like in the hurricane season.
1959: Erratic and intense
The 1959 season started unusually early when Hurricane Arlene slammed Louisiana causing flooding and destroying crops in late May. The most significant storm of the year was Hurricane Gracie which left most of South Carolina without power and caused 22 deaths and $14 million in damage ($114,579,584.78 today). Meteorologists at the time describe Gracie as “impossible to forecast” saying she moved “in about every direction on the compass.” To make matters worse, a series of tornadoes came in the wake of the storm, killing 12 in Virginia. All-in-all the season resulted in 57 deaths and $23,231,000 in damage ($190,128,452.42 today)
1966: Long and strong
The season started early and ended late with the most hurricane days in over a decade. Two Hurricanes (Faith and Inez) tracked across record distances. Hurricane Inez resulted in a record number of advisories (65) because she hit the West Indies, Bahamas, Florida, and Mexico. A tornado forming in the Bahamas killed a 15-month old child. Inez caused 1000 other deaths. A catastrophic amount of damage to life and property this season resulted in $432,650,000 (over $3 Billion today) in damage and 1094 deaths.
1973: One-two punch
Still reeling from a particularly deadly 1972, the US was not prepared for the strange scenario that was Tropical Storm Delia. Delia struck the Galveston-Freeport area of Texas, moved out to sea, and then came back to hit the area again 24 hours later. This had never been seen before. While $15 million in crops were salvageable after the first strike, they were completely destroyed in the second strike. An almost total loss of the seasons’ rice harvest devastated local farmers.
1983: Quiet… until it wasn’t
Again, the US wasn’t prepared for the anomaly that was 1983. Having gone 3 years since a mainland hurricane strike and with predictions for another slow season, we were complacent. The result was Hurricane Alicia, the first billion-dollar hurricane. Alicia brought with her 23 tornadoes and caused 21 deaths, and 3094 injuries. Over 63,000 people required emergency shelter or food when the evacuation routes were blocked by storms.
1985: Worst season in 99 years
Just 2 years after Alicia broke the billion-dollar mark, this season quadrupled it with more than $4 billion in damage. A record number of Americans were affected. For the first time ever, warnings were issued at some point for the entire East Coast. Hurricane Gloria (just one of the storms) struck from Florida to New Jersey. The season also brought 6 landfalls, the most since 1896. Three of these struck Louisiana alone (also a historical first).
1992: Record-breaking damage...again
The category 5 Hurricane Andrew smashed the damage records causing $26 billion in damage with $25 billion of that in Florida alone. Andrew racked up 65 deaths and left one-quarter million people homeless. The Florida Everglades were decimated, with approximately 70,000 acres of trees damaged and 182 million fish killed.
The common denominator in all these seasons is that the United States was completely caught off guard and woefully unprepared.
The rapidly changing conditions in the air and the ocean made it difficult to predict and prepare for the season. Unprecedented hurricane movement also perplexed meteorologists.
But this didn’t just happen once. It happened in all 6 of these years.We’d all like to think that this prompted massive improvements in how we prepare. We’ve watched over and over again Americans die, homes destroyed, and agriculture crippled.
The awful truth is, we are still terribly under prepared for what’s to come.
In the mid-1990’s we entered a new hurricane cycle. Weather researchers noted an increase in hurricane activity and a doubling of hurricanes spawned in the Atlantic basin.
And with coastal populations growing, each hurricane has the potential for more death and destruction than ever before. Just look at how in 1983 we had the first billion-dollar hurricane and just 9 years later, Hurricane Andrew racked up over $26 billion in destruction.
This pattern is going to continue. The questions is, are we ready?
With all these predictions, is our infrastructure prepared to handle it?
The answer is a resounding, NO!
"We aren't ready to handle more extreme weather," Joel Smith, a climate expert told CBS News. "First of all, our current infrastructure is way underinvested. It has deteriorated across the board. Dams, roadways, you name it, are not up to standards.”
Power, transportation, communications -- everything in our way of life is at risk THIS YEAR.
Even a small hurricane disrupts the weather patterns of the entire country. In its wake, it brings flooding, wind, and tornadoes across the eastern and great plains areas of the United States. Deaths from hurricane-related weather have been reported as far northwest as Wisconsin. Areas already prone to tornadoes are at greater risk in a more active season.
This is in addition to an alarming study that shows we should expect extreme volatility during the upcoming tornado seasons including more extreme months and more deadly strings of tornadoes. And this wasn’t a one-off study by a TV meteorologist. This is a prediction by noted tornado experts Dr. Harold Brooks of the National Severe Storms Laboratory and Dr. Patrick Marsh of NOAA's Storm Prediction Center.
In the west, the same weather anomalies that cause a strong hurricane season coupled with drought conditions create significant risk for wildfire outbreak in areas as diverse as the southern Appalachians through Nevada and California. Wildland Firefighting units across the country have raised staffing in preparation.
According to CalFire spokeswoman Capt. Elizabeth Brown, “We’re experiencing the longest sustained drought we’ve seen in years. Therefore the fuels are thicker, drier and are susceptible to flare up with the slightest ignition point. We are now seeing fire activity that gives residents less time to evacuate their homes.
I uncovered study after study warning the U.S. about the current weather patterns. I started to ask… why isn’t the general public aware? Why isn’t anyone putting this crucial information into the hands of the people that need it most?
The answer boils down to self preservation. It is easier and more profitable for the media and the government to provide recovery instead of preparation. And here’s why.
The sad fact is that it’s better for the media and for the government to keep Americans unprepared and in the dark.
More than 200 million people are affected by disasters each year but nobody likes to believe it will happen to them.
Over 42% of Florida and Georgia residents said they do ZERO preparations for the disaster season. And this in one of the most high-risk areas of the country!
Imagine the lack of preparations in areas with moderate to slight risk. These people are in for a nasty surprise.
Our complacent culture is especially problematic for the upcoming seasons. The US hasn’t seen a Category 3 or stronger hurricane make landfall in 11 years -- the longest streak since the mid-19th century.
Natural disasters are sadly out of sight and out of mind for most of us.
But the inconvenient bottom line is this:
We are due to get hit, get hit hard, and get hit soon.
In 2012, half of New York City plunged into darkness.
A city of 8.4 million people, with planners and emergency managers that could populate a small city on their own… had no idea how to handle a direct hit from Hurricane Sandy.
Residents of the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens were thrown into a personal hell that was called the “Wild West,” a “war zone,” and “a borderline lawless situation.”
Power was out. Cell phone service was out. Cars had been made useless after being submerged during the storm. Public transportation was non-existent. The only grocery stores within walking distance were either destroyed in the storm or looted shortly after.
At night citizens heard gunshots and watched slow-moving vehicles canvas the neighborhood. There were reports of men who claimed to be part of the “power department” knocking on doors at midnight.
They had no way out and none of the basic necessities for survival.
Almost immediately, residents of the projects on the other end of the peninsula made their way through the darkened streets. They ransacked homes, threatened lives, and furthered the disaster for residents who had quite literally lost everything.
When donations poured in from all over the country, organizations were inundated with useless items like used prom dresses, fish tanks, and perishable food items. Residents went to food distribution centers and were handed cans of soup… with no way to eat, open, or cook their donations.
Thousands were without power for over 2 months!
Not only did Hurricane Sandy expose failures of local infrastructure and law enforcement, but made painfully obvious a critical national security vulnerability.
Americans in the wake of disaster become sitting ducks for large-scale foreign attacks.
According to a study funded in part by the National Institute for the Aging,
“The loss of government security and control in a disaster- afflicted area may also incentivize terrorist action by reducing the costs associated with attacking specific targets. Terrorists’ preferences for “soft” targets are well documented... Diminished targeting costs for some previously “hard” targets could, in turn, increase terrorist action. Following Pakistan’s devastating floods in 2010, Pakistani Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, expressed grave concern that the Taliban and other terrorist groups would use the disaster to take advantage of the government in a weakened state, and, indeed, reports indicated that militant groups utilized the disruption to carry out attacks.”
A densely populated area like the East Coast is especially vulnerable to an EMP attack.
Terrorists and other enemies could do considerable damage on a global scale by taking out electronics and communications in a city such as New York.
The months that Queens residents were without power could easily turn into years during the next disaster. Currently, no one is encouraging citizens to prepare for this very real possibility.
There’s a familiar PSA that accompanies nearly every news story and weather report in advance of a disaster: “Make sure you have enough food and water for your family for at least 7 days.”
What they don’t talk about is the realities that happened in the Rockaways and the wakes of other disasters.
Are you prepared for no gas? No heat? No transportation? No cell phone service? Violence?
Not to mention the possibility that these conditions could last for months or even years.
What’s worse is that experts predict 2017 to be even more deadly than 2016!
I suspect you already know the answer.
Now, because of my passion for self-reliance, I am more prepared than most.
But even after all that, my realization was this:
In the event that supply chains are wiped out -- electricity, gasoline, and even transportation options -- I didn’t have a reliable, long-term source of power.
If there was a EMP disruption or attack, I had exactly ZERO options.
I began to search for a solution. Here’s what I found:
So, with these abysmal options before me, I built my own.
This became a million-dollar endeavor as I researched, created specs, and had the ideal power source built.
My first step was doing a deep dive into what was already out there. What were the pros, cons, and pitfalls of every type, size and model of backup power?
I found you can buy conventional generators quickly and fairly cheaply. In fact, that’s what most people do. When the hurricane warning pops up on their smartphone, they flood the big-box stores.
Shelves empty in a matter of hours. Most people don’t even know what they’re buying!
They go for what’s cheap or they go for what’s left. They’ll pay $600 for the smartphone that can issue the warning. But when it comes to actually heeding the warning, price is suddenly an issue.
They don’t realize something while they smugly load their car with a cheap foreign-made generator. They don’t understand…
... buying this garbage means they are basically throwing their money away in the strengthening wind.
It’s easy to see why these generators are complete failures. They are designed in big office buildings by corporate engineers who look at spreadsheets. They spend their days “analyzing the market” not in the trenches trying to survive.
I’ve dedicated my life to survival and independent living so it was very easy for me to spot the failures that a guy in a tie in a high-rise building would never see.
Here are just the most obvious failures of 99% of backup power sources:
Failure #1 Immobility
In a disaster, there’s a serious possibility you won’t be able to stay in your current home. Disaster zones are often evacuated by local law enforcement, completely destroyed, or in the middle of social chaos. Whether you plan for a bug out location or stay with a friend, you’ll want to bring your power with you. The generators I’ve found with enough power just to run a small appliances like a portable refrigerator for any amount of time are cumbersome and nearly impossible to move. The small, portable versions can barely keep up with the demands of a tailgate party, let alone sustain any meaningful living.
Failure #2 Dependence on a reliable supply chain
There are a variety of different fuel types for generators -- natural gas, diesel, propane, etc. What all of these energy sources have in common is this: If the local infrastructure breaks down, the supply chain becomes non-existent. Which means you’re huge, immobile backup power meant for your whole house won’t be running anything.
Failure #3 Short-term solution to a long-term problem
If you don’t have a reliable supply chain, a big-box generator will only provide you with a few days of use at most. What happens in situations like Hurricane Sandy where Rockaway residents were without power for nearly two months. Did they stop needing heat after a few days? What about ways to cook their food. In fact, as the autumn weather transitioned to the Northeast winter… needs for reliable power increased.
Failure #4 Say goodbye to electronic devices
Traditional internal-combustion engine generators suffer from something called harmonic distortion. The engine just cannot maintain exact RPMs to keep consistent output. That’s ok when you’re running something like a refrigerator or power tool. But when you plug in a laptop, cell phone, or GPS power spikes can easily fry the sensitive components.
Failure #5 Noise
Run a traditional generator during the day in a busy neighborhood and it just blends into the everyday noise. When the power’s out on your block, it echoes down the street. Try that at a quiet camping location and you’ll soon be a target of some angry neighbors. More than that, you’ll be broadcasting to the whole neighborhood that you have power. Prepare for less-prepared visitors who MUST charge their cell phone. Watch them suck away your family’s limited resources.
Failure #6 Deadly exhaust
Of the 931 Carbon Monoxide deaths in the last 14 years, generators were responsible for 800 of them. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, hundreds of people kept their generators in their home to prevent theft -- to have these poison-producing machines kill them in their sleep. You can either 1) keep your generator outside and risk losing it to looters or 2) sleep indoors in a gas chamber of your own making.
Failure #7 Stupid colors
Big companies like Honda and Champion have employees whose entire job is to select colors. They do all kinds of fancy research including focus groups, market trends, and miles-long reports. What they don’t do is spend time in disaster-zones thinking about the practical implications of a bright yellow piece of life-saving equipment. You might as well put a big red arrow that says “STEAL THIS MACHINE!”
Failure #8 EMP Susceptibility
I’ve been called paranoid until I’m proven right. It’d make me laugh if it didn’t terrify me. Over and over again, I’ve warned of problems on the horizon only to receive eye rolls or worse. An EMP attack is one of those warnings. We are stupid if we think that it will never happen. So continue to stock up on equipment that will do you ZERO good.
But hey, at least it’s cheap.
Backup power is not much different than any other piece of gear -- You get what you pay for.
People go out and buy the cheapest generator saying they’ll “make due” with what it provides. Then they find they’re spending 10 times as much to maintain, repair, and replace their “cost-efficient solution”
I have an attorney friend who asked me, “What costs more than an expensive lawyer?”
The answer is “A cheap lawyer.”
Cheap generators are extremely expensive.
First of all, they run on fuel that right now might be reasonable. In New York City during Hurricane Sandy, it was prohibitively expensive. That’s if you could find it all. With thousands of people looking for fuel for their generators, expect to spend many times the price of your generator in fuel -- especially if you need it long-term.
Secondly, the maintenance and repair of cheap options is expensive if not impossible. Most come with parts that can only be ordered from the manufacturers and the cases are designed so that it’s difficult for you to access them for repair. If you’re stranded with no power, you’ll have basically no way to repair or replace parts.
The noise level and flashy colors of off-the-shelf generators make them easy targets for thieves. There’s just no way to safely conceal a cheap generator.
Expect to buy 3 or 4 “cheap” replacements (if you can find them).
I knew just one of the failures of traditional generators could be the difference between life and death. When I looked at all 8, I knew this was unacceptable.
So, I sat down with an engineer and presented my findings. I gave him the following solutions to the 8 Failures of Big Box Generators:
When we had hammered out a solution, I paid him to build it. This wasn’t a small fee. All-in-all the project cost me well over $1 million.
I ignored “savvy business” suggestions to set up a “one-size-fits-all” PowerWhisperer production line in China. My critics said I was nuts to take direct control of production and manufacturing.
