A young broke the law while driving. An officer pulled him over to ticket him. And he told her she’d be better off doing a woman’s job.
That comment led to three charges against him:
- Contempt of a police officer
- Making sexist remarks in public
- A serious violation of another person’s dignity because of her gender
He’s been fined 3,000 euros — that’s about $3,700 — for his off-color comment. If he refuses to pay, he’ll have to spend a month in jail.
And, yes… you’re reading this right. Making a derogatory comment that is gender specific is now illegal in Belgium.
Just imagine all the problems this law could potentially cause… all the false accusations. Or sincere accusations in response to a simple misunderstanding.
Not to mention, they’ve basically outlawed losing your temper. Because that’s what happens. People lose their temper and they say stupid things… things they don’t really mean and that they would never say in a calm moment.
I wonder if this man had lost his temper and shoved the woman police officer instead of reacting verbally if the penalty would have been more or less?
These kinds of laws are gross violation of freedom of speech. In and of themselves they may seem harmless and well-meaning, but they open the door to oppression through speech control.
And if you don’t think this could happen here in the U.S., you aren’t paying attention to what’s going on, on our college campuses. Now more than ever, it’s important to be vigilant about your Constitutional rights… especially free speech and the right to bear arms. They are both under near constant attack.
