Drink to Your Health with De-Fluoridated Water

Opponents of Forced Fluoridation Gaining Scientific, Political Momentum

Decades-long policies in many major municipalities of adding fluoride to drinking water are starting to come undone. In Dallas, citizen activists cited scientific studies demonstrating adverse health consequences of fluoridated water and touted the budget savings that could be achieved by ending the practice. In May, they persuaded the Dallas City Council to seriously consider ending 50 years of water fluoridation.

Why should this seemingly esoteric issue matter to you? According to Phillippe Grandjean, adjunct professor of environmental health at Harvard, “Fluoride seems to fit in with lead, mercury, and other poisons that cause chemical brain drain.” In other words, the fluoride being pumped into our tap water without our individual consent may be making us dumber.

Does the Water You Drink
Contain Toxic Levels of Fluoride?

Consider the findings from professors Helen Cheng and Richard Lynn, as presented in “The Adverse Effect of Fluoride on Children’s Intelligence: A Systematic Review” (Mankind Quarterly, Spring-Summer 2013). They report that average fluoride exposure causes a drop in children’s intelligence “equivalent to 6.9 IQ points. Sensitivity analyses showed that after excluding studies that had other elements contaminations, the adverse effects of fluoride exposure on children’s intelligence remained to be
significant. Further, six of the studies reported significant negative correlations between fluoride in the body and intelligence. The evidence suggests that fluoride in drinking water is a serious public health hazard.”

Thanks to over-fluoridation of drinking water, 41% of American children over age 12 exhibit symptoms of fluorosis (which manifests via discolorations on teeth), according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control. Unseen, fluoride can accumulate in brain tissue at toxic levels, which may inhibit mental functioning and contribute to degenerative brain diseases.

Safer Ways to Prevent Cavities

Of course, fluoride is touted for its ability to help strengthen tooth enamel and reduce cavities. Yet over the course of time, fluoride can have the opposite effect on bones, actually making them more brittle. In any event, obtaining fluoride in tap water is unnecessary given the widespread availability of dental and oral health products you can
buy that contain the chemical.

You can get all the fluoride your dentist recommends through fluoride toothpastes and mouthwashes. As long as you don’t swallow fluoride-enhanced products, they pose far less of a hazard than fluoride in drinking water, which passes through the body and accumulates in tissues.

Despite what the American Dental Association says about fluoride being beneficial for most people, fluoridated water is not necessary for strong, healthy teeth if you take care of them. Keys to cavity-free teeth include avoiding sugary, acidic foods and brushing and flossing frequently.

Invest in Your Health with
a Water Filtration System

There is absolutely no good health-related reason to drink fluoridated water. Opt instead for bottled water (preferably spring water) or install water filters capable of removing fluoride and other contaminants.

In recent studies, urban tap water has been found to contain unsafe levels of bacteria, viruses, metals, cancer-causing chemicals, and even pharmaceuti – cal drugs. OMB Watch, a nonprofit research and advocacy organization, cited a study that found drinking water in 31 out of 35 U.S. cities was contaminated by hexavalent chromium. This is a known carcinogen when inhaled, and a possible carcinogen when ingested.

Unfiltered toxins in tap water can lead to chronic health problems. That’s why you should consider investing in a quality water filter. Be aware, though, that most will not eliminate fluoride. One that does is the Berkey PF-2 (and PF-4) Arsenic and Fluoride Filter.

As one health advocate put it, “If you don’t have a water filter, then you ARE the filter.”
