Make Your Own Energy Bars

Energy bars are a terrific way to give yourself a boost, especially when you’re working or playing hard. But at a buck or more a bar, they’re spendy. They don’t always taste great. And, a lot of them contain ingredients you may want to avoid.

You can make your own at a fraction of the price and choose your own flavors, so you know you’ll enjoy what you’re eating.

For the base, mix together

· 2 cups rolled oats

· ½ cup honey

· ½ cup whey powder

· ¼ cup peanut oil or canola oil

· ¼ cup nut butter

Fold in 1 cup of any combination of the following ingredients:

· Sunflower seeds

· Dried, chopped dates

· Dried cranberries

· Chocolate chips

· Pumpkin seeds

· Raisins

· Chopped walnuts

· Peanuts

· Dried berries

· Dried chopped apricots

· Shredded coconut

Press the mixture into an 8 by 8 pan that you’ve lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Allow the bars to cool and then cut them into 2-inch squares. Store in an airtight container.

Personal preferences vary, so toy with the ratios of the base mixture to get the consistency that you want. You can also add a teaspoon of cinnamon or a sprinkling of nutmeg for additional flavor. Make it your own!
